Headphones and a podcast microphone on a desk

I've been listening since 2019 — in Beijing and Shanghai, podcasts were my essential commute companion, and through them I've gained an enormous number of mentors and friends. Friends around me often ask: "What do you usually listen to? What do you read?"

Now that Xiaoyuzhou marks my "1,000 hours listened," it's time for a proper roundup! Over the years I've also come to know many podcasters — each attentive to a different field — so why not invite everyone to recommend together?

A traveling life coach and host of 28Up Live.

"I've subscribed to Meng Yan's podcast since its very first episode — it's now nearly the only show I never miss. I've listened to the 'Gaps in Knowledge' episode several times. As a typical knowledge-hungry, paid-content user, he named exactly what I'd been mulling: what counts as truly mastering and digesting ever-easier-to-access information? He then went on to circles of competence and ikigai — a framework I know well — giving me another chance to ask what my unique capability is. What I took away: get your hands dirty, use output as better input, and keep filling the gaps of knowledge in the field you want to go deep in."

Nine years in copywriting and planning, now freelancing plus light entrepreneurship on Xiaohongshu in youth education and wellness; host of the podcast "Freedom Compass." 9年文案策划人,目前自由职业+小红书轻创业,主做青少年教育/大健康赛道,《自由指北》播客主理人。

"This must be one of Xiaoyuzhou's rare paid shows. Early this year I went to Quanzhou twice, finished all five episodes, and walked every route they mentioned. I've always loved deep travel, and this show is like hiring a guide who has lived there for years and studied the local culture deeply — he spent a full 275 minutes on Kaiyuan Temple alone. I can't possibly remember everything, but I love the format: deep commentary, at your own pace, walking and pausing as you like. If you ever get to explore Quanzhou properly, don't miss it — and I hope more travel destinations get content like this."

"This is a show by my favorite 'internet overachiever' Songyue — a 10-year operations veteran now running a one-person company, head of a wild-growth operations community with 8,800+ members, and author of two books on traffic and retention. Back in her corporate days she updated her official account daily, posted continuously on Zhishixingqiu, wrote books, and worked out — a person who succeeds at whatever she touches. This episode shares her methods and mindset for learning, answering questions many of us have: how to build learning habits? What to do about study anxiety, or having only fragmented time? How to quickly grasp the core of a new industry? My favorite line: the essence of adult learning is solving one problem after another — learning your way through life and work."

"A chat show you must listen to while it's fresh. Over breakfast, on walks, before bed, doing chores… it fits any moment you want to unwind. Listening to the hosts feels like eavesdropping on close friends sprawled on a rug by a winter fireplace, sharing life troubles, relationships, workplace stories, lifestyles — exactly what we're all living through. So many topics land precisely on my nerve; every title feels custom-made, and I once believed co-host Xiancao was literally me in another body. Episodes on easing anticipatory anxiety, healing childhood unhappiness, what order-sensitivity means — all worth repeat listens."

Host of "No-Future Compass," a comedian. 「

"Girls need more than acceptance, tolerance, understanding, and healing — they need real power. I love watching the nonverbal side of human interaction: posture high and low, how bodies negotiate space… Humans are fundamentally animals; even in the most equal relationship, 'power' never leaves the room. This episode takes a fascinating angle and inspires girls to become people who wield power."

One episode gives you strength inside anxiety: by the end you realize that "surviving" — surviving with hope — is the most basic, most important, and sometimes hardest thing of all. For seeing the present through a wider (historical) lens, that's the episode I reach for.

Another one I couldn't help transcribing. My two main notes: 1) Build in public — make launching projects a habit, cultivate initiative, and learn to show your work; 2) Time is the most important leverage. Creating content and code is one of the most effective uses of it.

Recommended listening: the five episodes I've replayed most — from psychology, economics, and the diversity of the world, they've nourished me more than anything. No pretty words here; I just want to thank them for everything they've given me.
